October 2013 | Creech Road Elementary School Community Service Day
On Monday, October 28th, Project Manager, Alice Reese, Assoc. ASLA & CPSI, joined GlaxoKlineSmith’s volunteers on Orange Day with Elizabeth Sharpe from Wake County Public Schools to implement Alice’s design for Creech Road Elementary School’s Special Programs Play Area. Site Elements include a picket fence decorated with brightly painted flowers, a story teller chair, a post office play panel, operable mail boxes with pretend mail, raised planter boxes and new landscape shrubs. Because most students are wheel-chair bound, the asphalt play area was restriped to provide play opportunities for mobility impaired students. A roadway was striped around the asphalt leading to the activity destinations. The striping also includes a “fishing pond” where children can practice gross motor skill development using magnetic fishing poles and fish.
October 2013 | Partnership Elementary School wins Sir Walter Raleigh Award!
The Partnership Elementary School Play Area Renovation Project received the Sir Walter Raleigh Community Appearance Award in the Enhancement of Parks & Open Space category on October 22. Project Manager, Alice Reese, Assoc. ASLA, CPSI, worked closely with Partnership Elementary PTA, Mark Kenjarski, Principal, and Elizabeth Sharpe, Wake County Public Schools, to turn a mulch and asphalt schoolyard into a dynamic playspace which doubles as curriculum support. Site elements include a paved running track, a grass play field, a tetherball court, a Landscape Learning Tire Game (which doubles as seating for an existing stage) and an outdoor chalkboard with shade trellis. The existing asphalt play area was also restriped with innovative games which go beyond the typical four-square and hopscotch games. Congratulations Alice!
