Yates Mill Elementary School – Raleigh, NC

Yates Mill Elementary School, located  in the environmentally sensitive Swift Creek Watershed, was designed to reduce impact to Middle Creek, a valuable tributary of the Neuse River located on the western perimeter of this property.

The building placement, parking lot design and stormwater devices were all developed to reduce the impact of runoff by cleaning the water before leaving the site. Additionally, the students participated in a six-week environmental education program about how the site design protects water quality. The program culminated in a field day where students planted the constructed wetlands and bio-retention areas.

Yates Mill Elementary School received the 2001 Honor Award from the North Carolina Chapter of American Society of Landscape Architects.
